Physical Map of Europe

Tips for answering the coordinate (latitude, longitude) questions without a map:

1) In the western hemisphere, the higher the number of degrees in longitude you have moved, the further west you are from the Prime Meridian.

2) In the eastern hemisphere, the higher the number of degrees in longitude you have moved, the further east you are from the Prime Meridian.

3) In the northern hemisphere, the higher the number of degrees in latitude have moved, the further north you are from the Equator.

4) In the southern hemisphere, the higher the number of degrees in latitude you have moved, the further south you have moved from the Equator.

These tips, along with a basic knowledge of where countries, landforms, and climate types are located will help you to answer coordinate questions without the help of a map.

EXAMPLE:

Assuming all the following coordinate sets to be located in Europe, which is closest to the Mediterranean Sea?

a) 38N, 13E     b) 53N, 13E     c) 53N, 6W   d) 60N, 18E

The answer is "a". Of all the coordinate sets listed, 38N is the furthest south and since the Mediterranean Sea is south of Europe (in between the coasts of Southern Europe and North Africa), it is closest to the Mediterranean Sea.

If the above question asked with coordinate set was closest to the Arctic Ocean, a body of water bordering the coasts of Europe's northernmost countries then the answer would be "d" since 60N is furthest north.

Basic Facts About Europe Which Will Help You:

1) All countries and landforms in Europe are located in the Northern Hemisphere.  There will be no coordinate sets (latitude, longitude) in which the latitude is listed as "S" (south). If there is such a coordinate set than it is not located in Europe.

2)
